Vanning Japan Update

Planting Passionate Churches in Each of the Eight Regions of Japan

Author: J. M. Vanning (page 3 of 3)

Good News, Bad News

Japan has one of the highest rates of suicide in the world, and it is the leading cause of death among those aged 15-39. September 1st is the worst day for teen suicides in Japan. (Click here to read more.) Please pray for the lost and hopeless in Japan. They need the gospel yet gospel messengers are so few.

Bad news first: Since we’ve been asked many times, yes, we heard the tragic news about the Pals, a young family of five who were killed in a car accident on their way to final missionary training for Japan. And yes, though we do not know them we are deeply grieved. In reading their blog here, we both share their church planting vision for Japan and feel their heartaches in seeking financial partners. We would have enjoyed working with them for the sake of the gospel in Japan.

We want to share a tiny part (you can listen to the entire prayer here) of John Piper’s prayer at their funeral: “Lord, in the name of Jesus, and by the blood of these five, I ask, raise up — raise up! — a legion of replacements for the global glory of his imperial Majesty, Jesus Christ. Forbid that any of your children would hear of this news, and waste their lives on trifles.”

Yes, Lord! Japan needs — the world needs — more dedicated Christians both in sending and going! Those willing to sacrifice to go to a dark and difficult strange foreign country for your glory, Lord, and those willing to sacrifice by giving so others may go. Work in the hearts of your children to give and to go so that the millions who have never heard your message, more than 100 million Japanese, may hear and believe and glorify your name across the earth.

We also pray along with our brother, John, “that the great idols of gold and silver and material success would fall before the blood of this family — that these five, even these three little ones, who have now grown to the fullness of their glory and the perfection of beauty, not through the trials of three score and ten, but in the twinkling of an eye — that these all — all five — might be found among the champions of the victory of the gospel in Japan.” May your name be glorified even in the dark country of Japan and throughout the world, to the praise of your glorious grace, Amen!

Please join with us in mourning for the loss of this young family of five and praying for the lost in Japan who do not have the great Hope the Pals were planning to share with them.

And as we mourn and pray because of the loss of this family of co-laborers we also rejoice in how God is working to answer our prayers.

Here is the good news: Because God arranged some providential meetings a few days ago, we have some exciting partner projects in the works. We’ll share more in our next update as some of the details are worked out.

We want to say thanks to your loving response for help. Our goal to be at 40% by the end of August has not changed. With new financial partners added this past month, we are now just over 25% of our needed $6600/month to leave for Japan. However, many friends and family in Japan have also committed to partnering with us financially. We are working on adapting our mission board’s support system to accommodate the Japanese support which will raise our support levels significantly.

If you still want to help us reach our monthly support goal:

First, join our monthly support team. Paul might have been a tent-maker, but he had a support team of individuals and churches. If you haven’t already, click here and sign up with a monthly pledge amount of $200, $100, $50 or $20. (Email us if you have trouble with this so we can help set it up.)

Second, introduce us to someone you know who may be interested in partnering with us as well. Talk to your friends or family who may be interested in reaching the millions of lost in Japan. Talk to business owners looking for tax write-offs. Ask them to watch our video on our website. Help us get connected to them.

And above all continue to pray! We believe, if you are praying, God will lead you to help us in one of the ways above. We believe the more you are made aware of the spiritually destitute state of Japan and the more you pray for the needs there and for the worship of our King there, the more you will be lead to action.

Thank you for your interest in our ministry. We appreciate your love and care for us. We are excited and humbled to be working together with you to take the gospel to the many lost in Japan.

Nozomi and I believe that together with you, through His power, we can reach the millions of lost in Japan and see God transform the country from the 2nd largest unreached people group to a reached and reaching people group. God can do this and we have the honor of being used by Him to be part of the miracle by giving and going.

If you have any questions please email (vanningjapan@me.com) and communicate with us. We look forward to sharing more of our burden and vision with you.

We’re really going to miss my family when we leave for Japan. We loved spending time with my cousins on the Vanning side and their families. Hadn’t seen one cousin in almost 20 years.

The kids enjoyed dressing up like cows for free chicken with their friend from the nearby Japanese school.

We Need Your Help

A crowded walkway in Tokyo. At the end of this walkway is Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist Temple. Most of the people in this picture consider themselves Buddhist, but I see one man in the crowd who is a Christian.

God is still answering your prayers. He is working in hearts to support us by praying and giving. We have had two more individual supporters join our team this past month.

We need your help. We have a BIG goal for the rest of the summer. We are now just over 22% of our needed $6600/month to leave for Japan. Our goal is to increase our percentage by at least 20% by the end of August. But we need your help to do this. Here is what we are asking you to do:

First, join our monthly support team. If you haven’t already, click here and sign up with a monthly pledge amount of $200, $100, $50 or $20. Without the help of those who love us how can we expect strangers to give?

Second, introduce us to someone you know who may be interested in partnering with us as well. Feel free to share this with your friends. Ask them to watch our video on our website. Our contacts are limited, but with all of us working together we can reach our goal.

Thank you for your interest in our ministry. We appreciate your love and care for us. We are excited and humbled to be working together with you to take the gospel to the many lost in Japan.

Nozomi and I believe that together with you, through His power, we can reach the millions of lost in Japan and transform the country from the 2nd largest unreached people group to a reached and reaching people group.

If you have any questions please email us at vanningjapan@me.com and communicate with us. We look forward to sharing more of our burden and vision with you.

Love,
Jared and Nozomi Vanning

We’re really going to miss my family when we leave for Japan. We love visiting my 85 year old grandma and 87 year old grandpa. We try to spend as much time with them as we can while we’re still here in the States.

Nothing like free Tae Kwon Do classes…in street clothes. Emi loves wearing a dress so much she wanted to wear one for TKD.

Exciting Progress!

Almost all of my mom’s side of the family came from five different states to celebrate my grandmother’s 85th birthday.

God is answering prayers. He is working in hearts to support us by praying and giving. This is exciting progress.

We still have a long way to go until our goal of 100% by the end of March next year. We are now just over 20% of our needed $6600/month to leave for Japan. Our plan for this month is to find more ministry partners in the Greenville, SC area. Please pray God will encourage our brothers and sisters to join our team, not just in prayer but in giving.

Thank you for supporting our ministry through prayer and monthly giving. We appreciate your love and care for us. We are excited and humbled to be working together with you to take the gospel to the many lost in Japan.

If you haven’t joined our team, partner with us in taking the glorious gospel to Japan. Commit to our burden and vision; be a monthly pledge partner, because God has given us what we have to be used for His kingdom (click here and sign up to join our monthly support team).

Let us know of others who may be interested in partnering with us. God has established His church to work together in furthering the Gospel throughout the world. I believe together, through His power, we can reach the millions of lost in Japan and transform the country from the 2nd largest unreached people group to a reached and reaching people group.

If you have any questions please email us (vanningjapan@me.com) or communicate with us on facebook. We look forward to sharing our burden and vision with you.

Love,
Jared and Nozomi

I took this picture a long time ago from the top of Nagoya train station at Christmas time. So many lost souls who have never heard the Gospel.

Taishi’s getting ready to handle the giant cockroaches in Japan. Emi’s happy to just watch Taishi hold it.

God is Working

Back in Travelers Rest, SC after 4 weeks in PA

God gave us a wonderful trip to Pennsylvania the past four weeks. We were able to share our vision for Japan with many church people in the area I grew up. God blessed! My best friend from grade school introduced me to multiple pastors in the Philadelphia area. God allowed us to work out four more meetings for a return trip in the fall. While in the Pittsburgh area we spoke to the local church that our dear friends minister to. God blessed once again and we received eight pastoral contacts in the area to reach out to and hopefully set up meetings for the fall as well.

Thank you for your prayers! God is answering them above and beyond what we could ever ask or even think. We have heard from multiple churches that are planning to vote to partner with us in the coming months. Many more individuals have told us they want to join our support team. God is working even when our faith is weak. And in His working He grows our faith.

Right now we are at 20% of our needed $7000/month to leave for Japan. Our goal is to be at 100% by the end of March, next year. We are right on track to accomplish that goal! God has been working in the hearts of you, His people, to join our support team. Thank you, friends.

If you haven’t joined our team, I am trusting God to work in your heart to partner with us in taking the glorious gospel to Japan. We need prayer warriors on our team; commit to pray for us regularly (and reply to let us know you are praying). We need giving warriors on our team; commit to our burden and vision by being a monthly pledge partner (click here and sign up to join our monthly support team). We need going warriors on our team; commit to pray about going to help meet the need in Japan (and contact our mission board here to join our team).

If you have any questions please email us (vanningjapan@me.com) or communicate with us on facebook. We look forward to sharing our burden and vision with you.

Love,
Jared and Nozomi

In school Baron and I used to button our top button on our shirts and joke about being “holy men.” Back then didn’t understand that we aren’t holy because of what we do but because of what Jesus has done for us. We both now serve Him because of what He has done for us. God is good all the time.

What an honor it was to preach to the church family I grew up with and to share our vision for future ministry.

The God Who Saves

God is good, all the time. We had a wonderful trip visiting churches in Hawaii. Many now share our burden and vision for Japan who did not before. We trust God that He will continue to work in hearts to join with us in our ministry.

We are now on our second big trip in our deputation experience. I’m sitting here next door to the church I grew up in. My mom was baptized here when she was 9 months pregnant with me! It’s a strange feeling to be back here where I grew up. So many familiar faces mixed with new ones. I remember sitting in the pews here, walking the halls, playing basketball in the gym and soccer in the field.

God has brought me through so much in my journey of knowing Him. I don’t pretend to be there yet. He is still growing my faith. I struggle with trusting Him when difficulties come. The words of our Lord then echo in my ears, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” I don’t imagine these words said harshly but rather in a kind reassuring way, where Jesus takes me by the hand and lifts me up out of the wind-tossed sea and into the safety of His arms. After all it takes faith to jump out of a boat that is being battered by waves and walk on the surface of the water. But Jesus called and when He calls He empowers, and when we eventually fall for lack of faith, He is still there to save us from drowning.

I don’t know what you are going through right now. But I know my struggle to trust Him when churches are not partnering with us and our support levels are not increasing as quickly as I thought. The answer to our struggles is simple yet hard: look to Jesus. Look to Jesus for He said, “Have courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid,” (see Matthew 14:22-33). He is the God Who saves. We are the weak and weary who trust. And when we fail to trust, He never fails to save. So let’s get back up together and keep trusting Him.

Right now we are a little over 16% of our needed $7000/month to leave for Japan. I am trusting God to work in your heart to partner with us in taking the glorious gospel to Japan. We need prayer warriors on our team; commit to pray for us regularly (and reply to let us know you are praying). We need giving warriors on our team; commit to our burden and vision by being a monthly pledge partner (go to www.vanningjapan.com and sign up to join our monthly support team). We need going warriors on our team; commit to pray about going to help meet the need in Japan (and contact our mission board at www.ibmglobal.org to join our team).

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reply to this email and communicate with us. We look forward to sharing our burden and vision with you.

Love,
Jared
